Some places don't just visit you — they claim you. That's what happened to me the first time I set foot on Lesvos, a sun-drenched Greek island in the northeastern Aegean Sea. I came as a traveler. I left as someone forever changed.

A Land Blanketed in Olive Trees

What struck me first wasn't the turquoise water or the ancient stone villages — it was the olive trees. Millions of them. Stretching across hillsides, lining every road, filling every valley with silver-green leaves that shimmer in the Mediterranean breeze. Lesvos is home to more than 11 million olive trees — one of the largest and oldest olive forests in the world, with trees that have been standing for centuries, some for over a thousand years.

These are not ordinary trees. They are living monuments, rooted deep in volcanic soil, shaped by the same sun and sea air that has defined Mediterranean life for millennia. Walking among them felt like stepping into something sacred.

According to ancient Greek mythology, it was the goddess Athena who gifted the olive tree to humanity — and she did so with a vision of three noble purposes: beauty, food, and light. The olive would nourish the body, illuminate the darkness with its oil, and beautify those who anointed themselves with it. It was considered so precious that Athena won the patronage of Athens with this single gift, defeating Poseidon himself in a contest of offerings.
